My research focuses on the anthocyanin production from the callus culture of a medicinal herb, Taraxacum officinale (common dandelion). Anthocyanins are natural bioactive compounds with various health-giving properties, which include antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-cancer and anti-aging effects. Low toxicity and high medicinal values of these compounds make them a potential candidate to substitute synthetic food colourant. With plant tissue culture technology, a modified culture medium that promoted callus growth with enhanced anthocyanin accumulation was successfully established by manipulation of the medium composition.
